My Best Friend.

You can come home with me, the lady had said
With a lovely kind smile, and a pat on the head.
I'll love you, dear Greyhound, protect you from harm,
And the Greyhound responded by nuzzling her arm.

Okay said the Greyhound, I'll give it a go,
I suppose if I don't then I'll never know
What it's like to be cared for, to be loved and adored,
Must be better than being stuck in this kennel, bored.

But what if you get sick of me, or even change your mind?
Will you dump me or abandon me, leave me behind?
Oh no! Said the lady, please can't you see?
You'll remain by my side, my best friend you will be!

I mean it, dear Greyhound, I won't let you down
She said, stroking his head to banish his frown.
Okay, said the Greyhound, just give me time,
And I promise I'll be your best friend, And you will be mine.
